Eliza Chair for John Lewis

Article text

As part of the 150th year celebrations of the John Lewis Partnership we have been working with award-winning designer Katie Walker to create a new rocking chair. The name of the chair is Eliza after the wife of the founder John Lewis.
Katie says : 'I had been working with Sitting Firm on a technically very challenging project when Dave Green mentioned that he would like to collaborate on a piece for John Lewis.
As this was for John Lewis as part of their 150 year celebrations I wanted to create a chair that both celebrated Sitting Firm's manufacturing capabilities and continued the history of John Lewis offering elegant, useable, affordable domestic furniture with Britain at the forefront of good design.
The Eliza range, named after John Lewis's wife, currently includes: a chair with arms; a chair without arms and a rocking chair. The chair demonstrates Sitting Firm's expertise in the methods of steam bending with its double curved backrest which flows into the arms and down into the front legs. The resulting form is reassuring yet contemporary - modern design celebrating traditional craftsmanship and values.
