The sad loss of H J Berry

Sitting Firm were saddened to hear of the recent demise of a fine long standing company HJ Berry & sons going into administration this month.

As furniture manufacturer's ourselves we can fully understand the difficulties that small businesses have faced within the past year with our recent economic climate.

Sitting Firm are a traditional English company who specialise in chair manufacture, in our purpose built factories in Warwickshire all our furniture is made from carefully sustainable seasoned Ash, and carried out to the highest standards. All our products are reproduced from traditional styles and have the reassuring feel of solid craftsmanship of old.

Beautifully Handcrafted English Furniture
Bodging Milano Our very own founder Dave Green has signed up for a weeks course in the heart of Herefordshire to go back to basics with Gudrun Leitz & her greenwood chair workshop. Between the 30th March & 5th April, 10 designers will be going back to basics using hand tools, steam benders and pole lathes. With collaboration with Designersblock the 10 chairs created at the workshop will go on show at the Milan Furniture Fair in Milan during April, with the possibility of one going into production with Sitting Firm.

New Arden Range

Sitting Firm is pleased to announce that we are now manufacturing an extensive range of furniture from our independent designer Chris Eckersley.
		Launched in Milan earlier this year, designer Chris Eckersley was asked by Sitting Firm so work on the development of a new chair; building on the Arts and Crafts heritage but updated for the twenty-first century. Chris's approach was to retain the integrity of 'Windsor' construction, but to remove what he considered to be the unnecessary details. An inspired improvement was to extend the back bow and allow it to pass through the seat and fit into the side rails, thus creating a uniquely strong geometry. Chris has designed a six-seater table to complement the chair.
The ARDEN range is available in natural solid ash, or - more strikingly - with the back and legs painted in a choice of colours. Final finishing includes either a matt or satin lacquer, which is extremely durable and yet appears completely natural. All Windsor chairs made by Sitting Firm feature a one-piece seat; extra-wide boards of this quality are unusual.
In this range Sitting Firm and Chris Eckersley hope to have produced what William Morris used to advocate: 'Good citizen's furniture - solid and well made in workmanship, and in design having nothing about it that is not easily defensible.' Having donated a traditional farmhouse rocking chair to a very grateful family last year in Beckenham. This year one of our best selling products, the Harbury solid Oak round mirror finds a new home in Manchester, which is to be broadcast later this year.

Windsor Chairs still Popular with Americans

The traditionally made Windsor Chair from Sitting Firm is still very popular with our transatlantic cousins as orders from the USA continue to flow in.

Sitting Firm has been making Windsor Chairs following the traditional chair making techniques for over 20 years and in spite of global economic turmoil is continuing to receive enquiries from retailers in the States who want to bring a touch of period English living to their home.

Sitting Firm Director explains: “We have supplied some very large US retailers over the years with our hand-crafted and finished Windsor Chairs. With our new website we are now attracting even more interest.

“I suppose it’s no different in America than it is over here. With the current state of the housing market and scare headlines about recession and global melt down people are tending not to move house – but they are still spending money to make their house a nice place to be.

“Since our new furniture showroom opened back in March we’ve had many people visit who have explained that they have decided to stay put in their current house – but do feel they want a change. They are either extending and therefore wanting a whole new set of dining furniture or redecorating and wanting to adorn their room with a special piece from our bespoke furniture collection.

“Either way of course we are happy to help.”

Personalised Chairs Prove Especially Popular

Personalised children's chairs are proving especially popular in the run up to Christmas.

Sitting Firm make a range of children's chairs based on the ever popular Windsor Chair design. Each child's chair is a perfect minature of the adult version. Chairs can be finished in a natural wood stain or painted to match other furniture.

Our children's chairs are made in solid ash and each one is lovingly hand crafted and finished in our furniture workshops in Coventry.

Sitting Firm Director Stephanie Green explains a recent trent: "This year we've received more requests than every before to personalise the chair with the child's name or a message to commemorate a special occassion.

" Recently we were asked to make a chair for a children's pre-school nursery, as a thank you from a parent who had seen two children through the nursery. I'm told the chair takes pride of place, being used as the unique 'birthday chair' - with children allowed to sit in it on their special day."

"We are expecting a bit if a rush on children's chairs and our ever popular rocking chairs, in the run up to Christmas. These little luxuries are a perfect gift for those difficult to buy for friends and relatives."
